Russia fired more than 6,000 drones on Ukraine in July, more than any other month since it launched its full-scale invasion in 2022, the AFP news agency and the Kyiv Independent reported. The drone attacks killed dozens of people and injured many more. They also damaged civilian targets, including many homes, a kindergarten and an ambulance. According to the AFP news agency, data published by Ukraine's air force showed that Russia fired 6,297 long-range drones into Ukraine last month, up by nearly 16 percent compared with June. Why has Nvidia driven stock markets to record highs?
Investor excitement over artificial intelligence reached a new peak this week when better-than-expected results from chipmaker Nvidia drove stock markets in three continents to record highs. The rally began on Thursday and continued into Friday, as Nvidia overtook Google's parent group, Alphabet, to become the third most valuable company in the US. Its market capitalisation hit 2tn ( 1.58tn), surpassed only by Microsoft and Apple. The artificial intelligence (AI) boom has raised many questions, not least over safety and the impact on jobs, but there are also concerns that it might be driving unsustainable market exuberance. Here we look at the latest share price rise and whether it can be maintained.

AI takes aim at employee turnover
Employees are quitting jobs at record rates and companies are having a hard time luring them back. Exacerbating the problem is the fact that employees are now frequently working from home, making it harder for managers to identify employees who are unhappy. Plus, getting new hires up to speed is more challenging when they can't attend in-person training sessions or shadow experienced employees. To solve all these issues, companies are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence. But there's a limit to how much AI can do.
Report: AI startup funding hits record high of $17.9B in Q3
Even as economies struggle with the chaos of the pandemic, the AI startup space continues to grow stronger with increased investments and M&A deals. According to the latest State of AI report from CB Insights, the global funding in the segment has seen a significant surge, growing from $16.6 billion across 588 deals in Q2 2021 (figures show $20B due to the inclusion of two public subsidiary fundings) to $17.9 billion across 841 deals in the third quarter. As much as $8.5 billion of the total investment went into healthcare AI, $3.1 billion went into fintech AI, while $2.6 billion went into retail AI. The findings show how AI has become a driving force across nearly every industry and is drawing significant attention from VCs, CVCs, and other investors.

Google Assistant can finally pronounce names properly with new update
Google has launched a way for users to better improve how its Assistant pronounces names. Users will now be able to teach Google Assistant to enunciate and recognise names of contacts as they are supposed to be said. This can be found in Google Assistant's settings, under Basic Info, and then Nickname. "Assistant will listen to your pronunciation and remember it, without keeping a recording of your voice", Google says in a blog post. "The feature will be available in English and we hope to expand to more languages soon."
Japan's 2020 laptop shipments hit record high on teleworking
Shipments of laptop computers in Japan surged 25.1% in 2020 to hit a record high due to increased teleworking amid the novel coronavirus pandemic and the government's policy to supply computers to each elementary and junior high school student, an industry body said Tuesday. Laptop shipments reached 8.9 million units, but fell 0.2% by value to ¥679.7 billion from a year earlier, partly because demand concentrated on low-priced laptops to secure units in a limited budget to distribute them to schools, the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association said. The government has promoted the use of information technology in education since before the spread of the coronavirus, although Japan is behind in IT education efforts compared with other developed countries. The pandemic accelerated the schedule of the personal computer distribution, and most municipalities will complete handing out computers or tablets to every student in their schools by the end of March. Regarding demand related to teleworking, the purchase of PCs for working from home further increased since the government called for less commuting as the country declared its first state of emergency for urban areas such as Tokyo in April and expanded it to other parts of the country later in the month and May.
